Judah Ben-Hur lives as a rich Jewish prince and merchant in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 1st century. Together with the new governor his old friend Messala arrives as commanding officer of the Roman legions. At first they are happy to meet after a long time but their different politic views separate them. During the welcome parade a roof tile falls down from Judah's house and injures the governor. Although Messala knows they are not guilty, he sends Judah to the galleys and throws his mother and sister into prison. But Judah swears to come back and take revenge.

Audio
Ben-Hur was originally mixed in 6-Track Stereo, in the standard 70mm channel configuration
(pioneered by Todd-AO, see diagram and a write-up from FILM ATLAS), with left-center and
right-center channels. As this layout fell out of fashion with the advent of Dolby, all home
releases conform to a more modern surround layout (which isn t much of an issue, as the in-between
channels mix down to L/C/R quite nicely).
The UHD disc offers a discrete version of this mix (5.1 with empty LFE and identical surrounds), but
unfortunately, it suffers from a considerable amount of noise reduction. Thankfully, the older
LaserDisc release is also sourced from the original 6-track elements and sounds excellent. It
conforms to the same LCRS format, encoded in the form of Dolby matrixed stereo. Both versions are
included.
Two remixed options are also provided: a rather tasteful 5.1 track from the previous Blu-ray
release, which lightly enhances the use of surround and LFE channels without major content changes,
and a new modernized Atmos 7.1 remix with more substantial changes, including new sound effects.
Fidelity-wise, LaserDisc is by far the best. All other tracks were hit with significant noise
reduction. Out of those, the 5.1 remix is the least bad. Atmos and 4.0 are slightly worse than 5.1,
with Atmos taking a slight edge on music sections, which were spliced from a better source.
